When looking for the right wood for your projects, there are three things you always need to consider. Figure & grain, colour & species and ease of use.
These topics interrelate of course.
You may like a strong, beautiful red wood, but with non-professional machinery these type of woods are extremely hard to cut. Not a good start for easy wood projects.

Wood of choise for easy wood projects

This is a very important issue when working with wood. Especially if you are a beginner, you should always choose woods for your projects that are easy to work with. Exotic woods for instance may have beautiful colour and design, but when it comes to sawing or slicing they will most likely cause a lot of frustration.

Poplar, pine and other light coloured woods are usually a good choise if the design is not that important. These woods are easier to find than dark woods and they’re easy on your machines, with basswood usually being a good choise if you don’t want splinters. Trying for easy wood projects with cheap construction species like spruce and red pine is not a good option, most of these woods are very splintery and difficult to dry.

Many woods have different gradations of colour, which you can use to your advantage in easy wood projects. You can use it to show depth and differentiation in your woodworking projects very easy. Always keep a selection of different wood graduations around to chose from.

Also keep in mind that some woods will change colour as they get older, cherry is probably the best example. Fresh cut, this wood has a pretty light tone, but when exposed to sunlight it will age to a mediumdark shade very quite quick.
The same goes for other woods that you may use in easy wood projects, white pine for example may grow from a pale straw colour to somehwat golden over time.

Always consider this colour changing process in your wood projects.
